Sport
From fitness newbies to aspiring Olympic athletes, we can offer you a fantastic range of indoor and outdoor sports facilities. What’s important to us is that you’re able to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing, that’s why we encourage all of our students to participate in keep-fit activities, using our extensive sports facilities.
Indoors we have a four badminton court Sports Hall, Sports Lab and a fully refurbished gym with a wide range of equipment; all available for you to use throughout the college day. Head outdoors to our wonderful field space where you can use our All weather pitch, football pitch, rugby pitch and hard courts.
We have a number of Team Sports that you can get involved in at Long Road; click below for more information on your favourite sport!
We will also support you in taking part in individual sports, such as badminton, cross-country running, tennis and golf.
Can’t see the sport that you love? Let us know - we’re always happy to try and facilitate any sport based on student demand.
Casual Sports
If you’re just in it for the fun, try our Casual Sports programme which runs throughout the week. You can turn up, play for fun and get involved with the social side of sport!
All activities on offer are inclusive and relaxed, where students can attend with their friends and make positive changes to their lifestyle. For casual sports sessions you are not required to wear a change of sports clothes, we just ask that you wear sensible clothing and footwear e.g. no sandals.
We currently run the following casual sports sessions:
- Badminton: This activity has proven to be very popular with students due to its informal nature. With music on and racquets in hand, students love to relax and have fun by playing Badminton!
- Female-only gym and fitness classes: Female-only dedicated time in the gym and at the same time a fitness class in the sports lab. A different choice of fitness class each week, such as Zumba, Boxercise or aerobics with our College personal trainer
- Girls Basketball: Come along and shoot some hoops at our weekly girls' basketball sessions! Players of all different abilities join us so don't worry if you have no experience at all!
- Volleyball: This is another one of our most popular causal sports activities. Every week we set up the nets & the music, then it's over to you to have some fun playing Volleyball in a relaxed environment. If you've never played before this is a great opportunity to give a new sport a try!
- 5-a-side football: 5-a-side football is open to all students, and with our choice of indoor and outdoor facilities, 5-a-side football runs whatever the weather! Teams play in a round-robin tournament style each week.
College Gym
We have our own own-campus Gym open exclusively to Long Road students and staff. Our gym offers a variety of equipment including cardio-vascular machines, free weights and fixed-weight machines.
If you wish to use the college gym you will need to arrange an induction session with our Sport Services Team (you can find them in the Sports Centre!) and pay a £15 induction fee via ParentPay. During your induction our team will explain all aspects of health & safety you need to know whilst using the gym, as well as demonstrating how to use each piece of equipment.
Your £15 induction fee is a one-off payment and means you have a college gym membership for the entirety of your time at Long Road. The gym is open to students Monday - Friday, please visit the Sports Centre for specific opening times.
We have 2 sets of male and 2 sets of female changing rooms in the Sport Centre equipped with toilets, showers and mirrors; lockers are also available free of charge for you to store your belongings whilst using the gym.
