Long Road student wins Bronze at National British Schools Judo Championship 2024

We are so proud of student Simeon Nedev, who won a bronze medal at the National British Schools Judo Championships 2024!

Over the weekend of 9th & 10th March, Simeon travelled to Sheffield  to take part in the National British Schools Judo Championship 2024 at the England Institute of Sport - representing Long Road Sixth Form and Ely Dojo!

Leading up to the national event, Simeon attended a regional schools judo championships for the Eastern Area which was held at Thetford in January. At the Eastern Regional Schools Championship, Simeon took the Silver medal in his group, year 10–13 boys +90kg, defeating a pupil from Harrow School along the way and just losing out to a pupil from Coppleston School in the final.

At the National Schools Championship, Simeon was in the Boys year 12-13 +90kg group and, with no upper weight restriction, was clearly against much bigger and stronger opposition. Simeon put on a great display of technical judo with fast, decisive movement and attacking with multiple different techniques. Eventually settling for third place in his group, losing out to pupils from Cross and Passion College in Northern Ireland and Stewarts Melville College in Scotland - Simeon took to the podium and received a bronze medal for his efforts !

Ely Dojo Head Coach Stuart Aldous said “Simeon did a great job against some very tough, big, strong opponents. Whilst I know he had his hopes set on a place in the final contest this time, I think the determination and effort he put into his contests was exceptional, and he should be proud of his performance. A podium finish at a national event like this is a fantastic achievement and one we are all really proud of at Ely Dojo for both Simeon and Long Road Sixth Form College!”
