A Look Back at Careers Events in the First Term

We’ve hosted a large range of careers activities at Long Road over the first half-term, providing students with opportunities to learn from employers, explore different sectors, and develop a better understanding of future education and career pathways.
Visiting Speakers and Workshops
Throughout the term, students benefited from a variety of employer-led talks and workshops. In September, students took part in a Sustainability in Construction workshop delivered by Skanska, exploring how major construction companies are responding to environmental challenges through sustainable practices and social value initiatives. Health and Social Care students also welcomed Zaneta Ezeigbo from POhWER, who delivered a talk on the important role advocates play in supporting individuals to understand their rights and make informed decisions in healthcare, as well as exploring career routes into the profession. Finally, the Green Gap Year Challenge, led by Anna Hughes of Flight Free UK and travel specialist Laura Sigsworth, challenged students to plan a journey across Europe without flying, encouraging them to consider the environmental impact of different forms of transport, and build lifelong planning skills.
Degree Apprenticeship Preparation Programme (DAPP)
This full-day event was delivered by four Long Road alumni and current degree apprentices: Abbie Tuite (HSBC), George Hannah (Lewis Silkin), Olly Morris (Marshall Aerospace), and Safa Darr (Clue Labs). Students gained first-hand insight into degree apprenticeships, the application process, and the opportunities available across different sectors. Students practised key employability skills through practical activities focused on interviews, applications, and assessment centres.
One participating student gave a rave review: “Initially, the idea of committing to a full day for me felt quite daunting and overwhelming, but looking back, I feel it was so worth the time. It was refreshing to hear multiple perspectives and to be able to relate to degree apprentices who had been on a similar pathway to me. I felt like the skills we were taught and insights given were not only helpful in terms of the degree apprenticeship application process, but also just in terms of general employability. I’d really recommend attending regardless of whether you’re set on a degree apprenticeship or not, as I feel the workshop could be hugely valuable for any further education or employment pathways.”
University Information Drop-In Stands
Throughout the term, students also had access to a series of university information drop-in stands hosted by representatives from institutions that are popular destinations for Long Road students. Representatives from Anglia Ruskin University, Norwich University of the Arts, the University of Hertfordshire, and the University of Essex all visited the college to provide guidance on courses, university life, and the UCAS application process.
Looking Ahead
We would like to thank all the employers, universities, and guest speakers who have supported our students throughout the first term, as well as those students who voluntarily took part. Their contributions play an important role in helping students prepare for their next steps after college, whatever path they choose to take. We look forward to hosting more events next term and encourage both students and parents to keep an eye on college communications for future opportunities. Students should look out for details of our CV and Mock Interview Clinic taking place in November, while parents are encouraged to watch for information about our Apprenticeship Information Evening in February. Details of how to book places will be published before the winter break.
