Fresher's Fair 2026
On Friday 11the September, students at Long Road Sixth Form College had the opportunity to explore everything college life has to offer at our annual Fresher’s Fair.
With 28 stands in attendance and more than 600 students attending, the event was a fantastic opportunity for students to discover new interests, meet organisations and services, and find out how they can get involved outside their curriculum.
From enrichment and wellbeing to careers, sports, and independence, there was something for everyone to explore. Long Road’s Extra Mile Enrichment Programme showcased the wide range of opportunities available to students outside their lessons. Students can get involved with student-led clubs and societies, including the Filipino Society, Christian Union, and Student Council, as well as college-wide initiatives such as Duke of Edinburgh, and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
There are also opportunities linked to individual courses, including Med Squad, and the Geography and Environmental Society, giving students the chance to develop their interests, skills and experience alongside their studies.
The safeguarding and wellbeing section introduced students to our fantastic Safeguarding Team, who provide support on site throughout the year as well as our popular Wellbeing Wednesdays. We are also pleased to have welcomed visitors from CASUS, Dhiverse, and Everyone Health, who spoke to students about important topics such as addiction, sexual health, and vaping awareness.
For students thinking about their future, our Careers and Next Steps stands provided valuable information and advice. Our knowledgeable Careers Team were on hand to discuss careers advice and guidance, while visitors from the Royal Papworth NHS Foundation Trust shared information about work experience opportunities. Laura Sigsworth Travel Counsellor also spoke to students who may be considering taking a gap year,
Our Getting Active section gave students the chance to discover new ways to stay active and try something different. Alongside our enthusiastic Sports Services Team, students met representatives from East Anglian Youth Rowing, who offer a six-week rowing programme, and the Cambridge Rollerbillies, Cambridge’s local roller derby team, who introduced students to this exciting and unique sport.
Fresher’s Fair also highlighted opportunities for students to develop their confidence and independence.
The Cambridge City Council Elections Team were available to help students learn more about registering to vote, while Cambridge Citizens spoke to students about community organising and campaigning for change.
The response to Fresher’s Fair was fantastic, with more than 600 students attending and nearly 950 conversations recorded throughout the event.
Fresher’s Fair is an important stepping stone in helping students make the most of their time at Long Road. By connecting students with opportunities, support services, and organisations beyond the classroom, the event encourages them to explore new interests, build confidence, and develop valuable skills they can take with them into the future.
