Students Successfully Complete Gold DofE Canoeing Expedition

Congratulations to 16 Long Road students who have successfully completed the qualifying canoeing expedition for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award!
Completing a Gold DofE expedition is no small feat. Over the course of the programme, students developed their paddling, navigation and teamwork skills through a series of increasingly challenging expeditions.
Their journey included:
- Training: Two fun-filled days on the River Cam, learning essential canoeing techniques, boat handling and how to safely rescue capsized teammates.
- Practice Expedition: Three demanding days navigating the windy Norfolk Broads, putting their navigation and teamwork skills to the test.
- Qualifying Expedition: Four long days paddling down the River Severn in Shropshire, averaging more than 20 miles each day while tackling weirs, rapids and changing river conditions.
This year's expedition taught students an important lesson in pacing. Success wasn't just about managing energy on the water—where an enthusiastic morning could make for a very long afternoon—but also about looking after themselves at camp each evening. Over a four-day endurance challenge, finding the right balance proved to be just as important as strong paddling.
One of the standout moments of the expedition came near Ironbridge, where students had the opportunity to park their canoes on a nearby beach before swimming through the famous Jackfield Rapids—an unforgettable experience after days of hard work on the water.
Throughout the expedition, every student demonstrated outstanding resilience, determination and teamwork. From supporting one another through long days of paddling to overcoming physical and mental challenges, they showed exactly the qualities that the Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award is designed to develop.
We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and the commitment they have shown throughout their Gold DofE journey.
