Online Learning – Delivery of Remote Education

During periods of national lockdown, or when individual students, or groups of students are required to self-isolate and not attend college the college will operate according to the Government remote delivery expectations. This statement is part of the contingency planning for further full or partial restrictions on face to face teaching, or when students have tested positive for COVID but are well enough to learn from home.

Live teaching

Live teaching will be delivered using Microsoft Teams. Wherever possible this will consist of synchronous lessons for students whether they are in college or not, with all students having equal access to materials, support and feedback.

  • During complete college lockdown, lessons will be delivered fully online with student attendance recorded and monitored. Students who do not attend, or engage, will be contacted by the teacher initially and then through the guidance team systems. Where this is not possible, lesson content may be recorded for asynchronous learning, but this is a last resort.
  • For isolating students, teachers will aim to give remote access to lessons, for example by using a laptop connected to Teams that is live during the lessons. Where this not possible, materials and learning activities will be sent to the student.

Supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged students

Particular consideration is given to supporting students who may find remote learning difficult, either because of technical access or the need for additional learning support.

Students in receipt of college bursary or financial support should contact the college to request any support needed if you don’t have this equipment available at home.

College support for students during lockdown continues as normal and students should contact the Academic Support and Student Welfare team with any concerns.

All students and Access to IT

For a list of recommended IT equipment and purchase options, please follow this link. All students have free access to Microsoft Office 365, including storage space, and the Adobe Creative Suite. Any students struggling to access files or learning platforms should try to use the online IT support first before emailing helpdesk@longroad.ac.uk

All students have completed an Induction Programme which included practical guides on how to access our remote learning platforms (MS Teams, ClickView, OneDrive, Moodle and ProPortal) as well as the IT Acceptable Use Policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Online security and safety is critical during this lockdown and increased online activity. In addition to our own processes for reporting concerns to our Safeguarding Team, students and parents can read up to date advice and guidance on the NSPCC site and if you have concerns about online abuse you can contact the police CEOP line directly.

Expectations for Online Learning

  • All timetabled lessons will be live on Teams at the normal timetabled time. If teachers are unable to run an online lesson at the normal time, they will let you know. In such cases a recorded lesson or other work will be set.
  • Registers will be taken each lesson and attendance recorded as normal. If you are ill and cannot attend, you should report your absence as if you were coming into college.
  • Non-attendance will be followed up and parents will receive a weekly summary of any sessions missed.
  • Students are expected to have web cameras on, unless told otherwise by teachers.
  • You should try to find somewhere suitable to work where you can concentrate. This should be a quiet place if possible, and where you won’t be disturbed during lessons.
  • Students must be appropriately dressed and ready to learn, just as in college (completed pre-reading, have a pen etc.).
  • Teachers will be aiming to include interactive sections of the lessons using the chat function, breakout rooms or direct questioning in order to check learning, promote dialogue and class discussion.
  • Lessons will be a mixture of teacher input, student work, collaboration, checking of work (through questioning, or a quiz, Kahoot etc.) and setting of independent work. The balance of these activities will change from lesson to lesson and from subject to subject.
  • Teachers will continue to set independent work, mark it and give feedback. This is especially important now that teacher assessed grades are being used in place of exams. Again, this will vary by subject, and some independent work will be preparation work (for example reading) that won’t be marked.
  • Academic Support will continue during online learning, including LSA support during remote lessons.

Additional resources

The college has a range of online learning resources, in addition to Moodle, that can be accessed as part of the directed learning, or for independent work. Some of these may require separate log on passwords and will be provided via subject areas. Others can be accessed using your Long Road email address and normal system password.
