OFSTED report 2017
Long Road Sixth Form College is delighted to announce that it has been awarded Good in all five categories in its Ofsted Inspection of January 2017. Here is a summary of the inspectors’ comments:
College leaders have established a highly-inclusive and supportive college environment with a broad and flexible curriculum.
Attendance is good, and students arrive ready to work and motivated to learn.
A good standard of teaching and learning enables Long Road students to be successful in their courses and progress to higher or further education, apprenticeships or employment.
The college compares favourably with similar providers across the country, and is improving on this factor year-on-year. Students do better than expected on arrival and gain high-quality theoretical and / or practical skills and knowledge.
Students receive very good information, advice and guidance before they join the college.
Students are able to choose the right qualifications for their career goals.
Managers monitor teaching, learning and assessment effectively.
Teachers and progress coaches have high aspirations for students. Students are set individual goals to enable them to make good progress against precise, measurable and challenging targets, and benefit from regular ‘learning conversations’.
Lessons are well-planned and enjoyable, encouraging students to produce work to a high standard and to make good progress.
Teachers check that students understand their learning goals and set activities to meet the differing abilities of students. Teachers work with students to improve their spelling, structure, composition and grammar. As a result written work of a high standard is produced.
Students, including those with additional needs, gain in confidence, contribute well in discussions and develop good independent study skills.
There is access to high-quality resources and quiet study areas in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and a high-quality virtual learning environment (Moodle) to further develop these skills.
Enrichment activities enhance students’ learning and develop personal and social skills.
There are educational visits, community work, sport and the arts.
To prepare students for future employment there is a broad range of work-related learning activities.
There are close links with local and regional employers to understand specific industry requirements.
The college has effective arrangements for personal development, behaviour, welfare and safeguarding.
An ethos of tolerance and respect has been fostered, leading to students’ positive attitudes and behaviour. Students feel safe and demonstrate good tolerance of different cultures and life in modern Britain, with a good understanding of British values and democracy. The college has implemented an initiative to register students on the electoral roll, thereby increasing participation in local, regional and national elections.
