Why Work for Long Road Sixth Form College?
The core objective of Long Road Sixth Form College is to maintain our position as a high-achieving and inclusive sixth form college which inspires, helps and motivates our students to be the best that they can be. We recognise the vital importance of our staff in achieving this aim.
All our staff share a passion for teaching and learning and are encouraged to support each other and to recognise each other’s strengths. Long Road Sixth Form College is committed to enhancing the individual skills and knowledge of all our staff, to enable them to work positively with our students and our community partners.
If you choose to come and work with us, we can offer you a wide range of benefits…
Long Road Sixth Form College is attractively located and is easy to commute to, within walking distance of Cambridge Rail station and well-serviced by local bus routes. The college has on-site parking available to all staff, however following the introduction of a very popular cycle-to-work scheme many of our staff prefer to make their way to college by bike. We have established a number of initiatives to promote health and well-being, including staff sports teams and staff-only training sessions held in our on-site gym.
We are keen for all our staff to enjoy a healthy work-life balance and we actively promote family-friendly working. Childcare vouchers are available to help support our staff with childcare responsibilities. Family-friendly leave is also available should our staff require it, and we operate generous maternity, paternity, adoption and parental leave packages. We will always seriously consider requests for flexible working and many of our staff have enjoyed the opportunity to undertake a career break, secure in the knowledge that they will be welcomed back to Long Road Sixth Form College.
What makes us special?
We focus on five key messages for prospective students:
• A strong academic record (96% pass rate in 2017)
• Graded “Good” by Ofsted in our last 3 inspections
• When it’s time to move on up, we’ll help you stand out from the crowd
• Superb facilities
We offer one of the widest ranges of courses in the region: A levels from Art, Craft & Design to Spanish, and Level 3 Diplomas from Applied Science to Sport. What’s more, students can mix and match A levels and Diplomas to create their own ideal programme. We also offer Access to Level 3 courses which enable students to improve their GCSE grade profile, and Level 2 Diploma courses. Entry grades range from four grade 3s for Level 2 Diplomas to the top grades of 9 in the new GCSE qualifications. Information on courses can be found on this website.
This diverse student body makes the College an exciting and vibrant place to work. Students work in a mature, productive atmosphere in collaboration with their teachers and other staff members (they call teachers by their first name) and are provided with tailored support by a team of progress coaches, who also help students with UCAS applications.
Links and enrichment
Our links with a wide range of local companies, organisations and university departments gives us an unrivalled contact base to enrich our students’ learning. Every year all members of staff are encouraged to take part in a LINK day, which they spend in an external organisation of their choice. This enables us to keep up to date with employer requirements and work / work experience opportunities.
Each term there are over 100 visits and visiting speakers for students to attend. In autumn 2015 these included visits to Napp Pharmaceuticals on the Cambridge Science Park, a Life Behind Bars conference for Sociology students, a theatre studies workshop with Steve Berkoff in Camden Arts Centre, London, a talk by Rotary Peace Scholar Maria Victoria Gabioud, afternoon tea with Speaker of the House of Commons John Berkow and an amazing array of sport development courses such as dodgeball and FA football coaching. To find out more, visit the Noticeboard section of this website.
We have a successful sporting record in the Association of Colleges and British Schools and Colleges leagues and tournaments, and the College has its own Basketball Academy. The Sports Centre includes a sports hall, fitness suite, practice room and classrooms. There are extensive playing fields and an all-weather hockey pitch.
Other College facilities include a large, zoned Learning Resource Centre (LRC), a Performing Arts Centre, a suite of Visual Arts studios arranged around their own quad, darkrooms, and recently-refurbished science laboratories, a zoned student canteen, the Student Centre and numerous pcs around the College with Wi-Fi freely available across the campus.
How we develop staff
As a large College we can offer excellent training and career development opportunities. Our teaching, learning and assessment programme not only enables academic staff to enhance their skills through supportive, carefully- targeted observations but also to benefit from the know-how of visiting pedagogical experts. The structure of the College allows progression not only into academic-related management posts within departments but also into related areas such as academic support, learning coaching, Extended Project Qualification, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Equality Awareness and Enrichment management.
Support staff opportunities
A college of this size requires a highly-skilled and diverse support function. This includes areas such as careers, technical support for courses, estate management, Student Services, IT services, LRC management, finance, counselling, e-learning, governance, human resources, marketing and student supervision. These staff members also benefit from College-wide and bespoke training.
Long Road achieved Good in its 2017 OFSTED inspection, and we are now taking the next steps to become an Outstanding College. We seek teaching and support staff who are committed to our unique ethos of working in partnership with individual students to ensure each achieves his or her full potential.
Long Road Sixth Form College is committed to the promotion of equality and the elimination of discrimination. We welcome applications from all members of the community.
The College holds Positive About Disabled People status.
