Why you should join Long Road Volunteering Club

Posted on

Student Dahna got in touch with us today to tell us why she loves being part of the Long Road Volunteering Club, and why she thinks you should join too!

“I enjoyed volunteering as part of my Bronze DofE award so when I heard of a Volunteering Club opening at Long Road I knew I had to join. The great part of our volunteering club is our volunteering placements are tailored to us personally.

During the first meeting, Sam, the teacher who runs the volunteering club, asked each one of us what are our skills and hobbies, which helped him find the best options. You can also propose your own project ideas and Sam always supports them and helps you realise them.

I love sewing so Sam introduced me to Marion, a blind lady who shares my love for sewing and knitting. We decorate bags with beautiful rosettes and I got the chance to teach other volunteers sewing skills which will come in hand in life as well as in our volunteering sessions. I also volunteered at a fundraising event for guide dogs. It was near Christmas so I helped to serve refreshments and mince pies to the people who attended the event. The atmosphere was fast-paced and exciting. We raised a lot of money too which was very rewarding!

I think everyone should get involved in volunteering because you get to meet new people and broaden your knowledge about the world around you. It helps to improve your communication skills and confidence. Most importantly you get to help someone in your community to do what they love and it is always so much fun.”

Thanks for chatting to us Dahna, it sounds like you’re doing some amazing volunteer work!
