“Some thirty colleges and sixth forms from around the country enter each year. In the regional phase we overcame Moulton College from Northampton 4-0 before holding a very good Hills Road side to a 1-1 draw. We then beat Newport Grammar in the regional final to become the eastern champions.
“Yesterday was the national finals held in Bedford where we beat Barton Peveril on penalty flicks after another tight 2-2 draw, with goalkeeper Kieran Chandler crucially saving two flicks before Welsh international Rhodri Furlong, who scored two goals in the game, flicked us into the final with a great top corner bound effort.
“In the final we met a talented Farnborough College side, who beat northern champions Sir John Deane’s in their semi-final. After a stalemate in the first half, Guy Flynn managed to take a quick set piece that caught the Farnborough defence napping before flicking the ball into the top corner of the goal. A very tired LRSFC held on and defended magnificently to hold onto our slender lead through some excellent goalkeeping and despite some very close misses.
“The guys were quite rightly thrilled to win the competition, some for the first time and some for the second time in two years!”
