Dear Year 11 Students, Parents and Carers
You will have heard the Prime Minister yesterday explain that the Delta variant is spreading faster than predicted and whilst the vaccine rollout is a brilliant success for the NHS, ‘there is a real possibility that the virus will outrun the vaccines and that thousands more deaths would ensue that could otherwise have been avoided.’ This is the key reason that the Government has decided now is not the right time to open up society and allow us to move to step 4.
At Long Road, we have been really looking forward to welcoming you to the College next week, however, as the PM’s statement makes clear, the NHS needs a few more vital weeks to provide those important vaccinations to save lives. So, reflecting very carefully on: the PM’s announcement, on the Department for Education’s FE guidance that states that Open Days should take place only once we move to step 4, and having consulted local Public Health today, we have decided that our Welcome Days cannot go ahead as planned this year.
We know this will be very disappointing news and we have taken the decision with much reluctance. However, we do not think it is sensible for the safety of our wider community to bring thousands of students across the county into Cambridge, we had expected to host over 2000 visitors. We will share with you very soon our virtual replacements for the Welcome days.
We do understand that thanks to Covid-19, your last few years at school have been very disrupted and we fully understand that starting College could feel a little more daunting than usual. Please don’t worry. We will make sure that when you do start with us, through your induction and subject classes, we will encourage and support you into College life and learning at Long Road. We have already planned induction with much smaller classes and we will ensure that we build in some activities we had hoped to run on the Welcome Days so you won’t miss out.
We are looking forward to the start of next academic year and we are eager to see you in person as soon as we can. Despite all the challenges that Covid-19 has presented us with, we will do our very best to make sure that 2021/22 is a wonderful year for you.
