Do you want to work in forensic, medical, laboratory or industrial science? Do you want to take an apprenticeship in science or study science at university? Do you want to study aspects of Biology, Chemistry or Physics without taking full A levels? Do you want to go on exciting industry visits and have a special career plan?

If so, the Long Road Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science could be for you.

You can take the Diploma as an:

  • Extended Certificate worth one A level (and take other subjects alongside the course)
  • Extended Diploma worth three A levels

Where will it take me?

Here are some students who have taken the Applied Science Diploma and are now studying or on an apprenticeship:

What do I do on the course?

The Level 3 Diploma will provide you with  a broad range of skills that will prepare you for employment or for higher education. Dedicated laboratory facilities provide you with the opportunities to build on your previous studies of biology, chemistry and physics. You will find out about working in the science industry with experience of a broad range of practical activities which can include analysing unknown chemical compounds, genetic engineering of organisms and forensic investigations.

You will develop essential know-how in  numeracy, as required in scientific settings, and find out how the general public perceives science. Through your work, both as an individual and as part of a group, you will find out what  it is like to work in the science industry and prepare yourself for further study or employment in the sector.

Year 1  You will concentrate on learning the techniques and skills required for working in a laboratory.  The material will cover essential aspects of biological, chemical and physical science research. This will provide you with the knowledge and ability to plan and carry out rigorous scientific investigations.

Year 2  Practical activities will be linked to professional applications of science to give you an experience of  the use of science in an authentic manner. This will enable you to use your skills with confidence in further studies and in science-based employment.

Do I go on any visits? How do you prepare me for the future?
