Virtual Volunteering Club – Harper

Posted on

Harper is a Year 2 student studying History A Level, Politics A Level and Geography A Level. Harper is another of our Volunteering Club students that have been volunteering with Age UK during lockdown making weekly phone calls or socially distanced visits to elderly people to help combat loneliness.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Age UK?

It sounded like a great opportunity, to make someone else’s week by spending just an hour of your time with them. I would never want my grandparents to go a week without properly talking to anyone so I thought it would be rewarding to help other people.

Why do you enjoy this volunteering activity?

I enjoy volunteering because Doug (who I am paired up with) was a tank driver in the Second World War, I have a keen interest in the subject matter and we have many long discussions about such. His many hair raising stories are thrilling to listen to.

Why would you encourage other students to volunteer with Age UK?

The elderly people you will be visiting are genuinely lovely and just want a friend to talk to. You can make their week by visiting or calling them, while only taking up the smallest amount of your own time.
