Congratulations to 1st Year A Level Photography students; Joe Poulter and Rachel Hunter who were the prize winners in this year’s Long Road Zine Competition ‘Return to Sender.’
We asked Joe, who won first prize, to tell us what makes an outstanding zine.
“I think a good zine has to fit together well. The photos themselves are really important but I think the main thing is considering each photo individually, how they are composed and how they are visually similar to each other and then laying them to sequence the pages. Then you have to work on the front cover, the title placement and a relevant choice of font. When you take all of these factors into consideration then the zine in its entirety can carry its own message and emotion.” Joe recommends looking at Marc Vallee’s ‘Vandals and the City’ as an example of an amazing zine.
Well done to all who entered – keep checking our website for future photography workshops and competitions!
