“The conference was presented through a series of panels, and each panel member gave their expert opinions on war, using their own experiences to make their case. We were able to listen to some highly distinguished guests such as Lord Ashdown, who led the Liberal Democrats from 1989 to 1999 but was previously a Royal Marine. Also at the conference was Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who was a cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher during her entire leadership.
“We also gained a real insight into military opinions from a range of former military leaders. Long Road students joined in with others, including leading political and history academics, to question the experts. I asked Lord Ashdown how the UK’s exit from the EU will affect the UK’s ability to deal with international security issues, given the changing international situation in relation to Russian ambitions and a change of President in the USA.
