The College regularly invites Members of Parliament to College. On this occasion, one of our students had an opportunity to see her local MP at work. Chloe Beer reports:
“For two weeks during the summer, I carried out work experience with my local MP, Shailesh Vara (pictured). I was based at the Houses of Parliament and helped his assistants with casework, for example, replying to constituents’ correspondence. I also went to many debates at both the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Hall and sat on a select committee on HS2 to hear about its impact on local communities. Constituents who would be affected by the proposed route came in and explained why it would be detrimental to the community and how it would be better to build it underground to save wildlife. In addition, I had a tour of the House of Lords, where I saw the different chambers. I was fortunate to be able to go to Conservative HQ where I carried out telephone canvassing. What’s more, I spent some time in the Minister of Justice’s office. The icing on the cake was meeting Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.
