Our men’s team got the Easter holidays off to a great start with a long weekend in the Spanish capital with BTM Basketball. This incredible trip was action-packed and fast-paced; with some early mornings and late nights allowing our boys to really take in all the sites and experiences that Madrid had to offer them.
Read their diary below and spend the weekend on tour in Madrid with the Long Road Lions Basketball Academy…
Day 1: Madrid Tour
Awesome first day on tour with BTM Basketball in Madrid. The trip started with a long, hard day of travelling on an early morning flight. However, touching down in Spain, excitement soon woke up the team. This buzz of excitement set us up for our first training session of the tour at La Luz basketball stadium in Tres Cantos. We finished off the day with an awesome Euroleague game watching Real Madrid vs Zalgiris at the WizInk Center.
Now for some sleep to recoup ready for a full day of training and the first game tomorrow.
Day 2: Madrid Tour
A physically hard day with 4hrs on the court this morning. Starting with early morning shootarounds and walkthroughs, followed by a skill clinic workshop with the Tres Cantos Technical Director Alvaro Gijon Lopez focussing on transition principles. We grabbed some burgers for lunch and had some well-earned rest time before our first game of the weekend: Long Road Lions vs Tres Cantos.
Unfortunately, after a tight first half which saw the lions down 7 at the half time break, a poor start to the 3rd enabled Tres Cantos to push the lead out. The 4th was tight but the damage had been done!! The boys worked hard but lost their legs a little in the second half.
An awesome dinner to finish off the day gave us time to reflect on what we had learnt and takeaways going into game 2.
Rest day tomorrow as we head into Madrid to see the sights!
Day 3: Madrid Tour
After a tiring first 2 days, we took some time to relax and experience the city. A huge Spanish political protest made things a little tricky, but we still got to take in all the sites of Madrid and spend the day shopping; most of the lads headed straight to Nike and Footlocker before hanging out in Madrid’s beautiful Retiro Park.
In the afternoon we travelled just outside the city to watch Tres Cantos Men’s National Division 1 team and then an amazing Spanish Ladies Division 2 game; treating us to some high-quality basketball!
We finished with dinner back in central Madrid, ready to enjoy our last day of tour tomorrow.
Day 4: Madrid Tour
Our final full day on tour in Madrid with BTM Basketball.
We made our last day jam-packed full of basketball, starting with early morning practice followed by a 2nd workshop with Tres Cantos coach Alvaro Gijon Lopez on ball screen offence and defence, form shooting and transition work.
Heading to the mall for some lunch we had some down time before getting ready for our last game of the tour against Tres Cantos. The boys were tired but managed to bring enough energy to the table to grind out the 63-61 win!
With high-energy and excitement buzzing in the air around the team, we finished the evening with dinner back at the mall, reflecting and celebrating our win, and all our experiences on tour.
