Kes Berry – Long Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Kes Berry, who joined Long Road from St Bede’s Inter Church School, Cambridge. Kes studied BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design and is now off to study BA Fine Art and Oxford University! We hope Kes can be an inspiration to all students studying / thinking about studying Diploma courses that the sky is the limit!

Read below for Kes’s story…

Hey, I’m Kes.

I studied at St Bede’s Inter Church School. I studied the BTEC Art & Design Extended Diploma. Which meant 2 years of ultimate creative bliss. Being treated like an artist in residence. So much creative freedom. The tools given to me by this course and the teachers allowed me to define myself as an artist; translating my art style in a sophisticated manner.

This morning I received the grades D*DD (which translates A*AA for those who don’t understand the btec system).

So now I have confirmed my place at Oxford University, studying BA Fine Art. I honestly couldn’t have achieved those results without the help of the staff.

I have multiple favourite things about Long Road. It’s truly a community. You will never feel left out at Long Road. I met some amazing friends and teachers; that truly helped form me into the woman I am today. The school grounds itself is tucked away in nature which makes it feel like a tiny village, a total safe space. You’ll never feel alone at Long road. It’s a place where you truly become yourself and prep yourself for the real world.

I would like to thank everyone at Long Road for helping me with this achievement but a special thanks to: Lisa for helping me with everything, listening to me waffle and guide me in the right direction. Making sure that all the deadlines are met and that I’m comfortable. To Ruth for being such a great role model, teaching me how to express myself creatively, that makes visual sense. Teaching me that creative mistakes aren’t something to dwell over. To Owen, my first year teacher who helped make that leap from GCSE. Who really opened my eyes to how many possibilities there are in art. Finally a thanks to the Principal, Yolanda, for having my back and helping me achieve these grades. I will truly miss you all.

Ruth Laslett, Head of Visual and Performing Arts, said “I am thrilled to see Kes will be able to follow her dream of studying Ba Hons in Fine Art at Oxford University.  She has shown 100% commitment to her studies and has risen to the creative challenges presented by the Extended Diploma in Art & Design course here at Long Road.

Throughout the course she was able to experiment and play with ideas and concepts, which were often informed by her exploration of her own identity and family. Her well deserved success has reconfirmed that choosing a vocational qualification in Art and Design can lead to amazing opportunities.

Well done to Kes, it was an absolute pleasure to teach you and it inspires me to see you achieve so highly.”
