Refurbishing the Canteen / Refectory has been high on the wish list of College Estates Manager Gary Woolley for some time, so when the college got the go-ahead, he set to work with architect firm rh partnership and contractors Camstone to turn the dream into reality.
The new canteen – renamed the ‘Food Centre’ to tie in with the college Learning Resource Centre, Student Centre (also designed by rh partnership) and Sport Centre – bigger, brighter and better – and above all, it has a much larger kitchen so that a wider range of food will be available.
Chartwell, who runs the Food Centre for Long Road, is rolling out a new menu nationwide, with an emphasis on healthy food alongside the old favourites, and there is still a Costa Coffee, self-serve sandwich and drinks area and drinks machines for those who want to eat more quickly.
Students Fabiha Khan (left in main photo) and Sofina Haque (right), who have just joined Long Road from Chesterton Community College, were very enthusiastic about the Food Centre. “It’s great that you can get such a variety of food here, including halal dishes – and it’s so spacious!” says Fabiha.
“I love the colours,” adds Sofina. “It’s bright, there’s plenty of room and it’s got a really good vibe!”
