New AoC Sport lockdown challenge spurs colleges to go to the moon
Colleges have been around the world, now it’s time to get out of this world. With the news of a third national lockdown, AoC Sport is launching the Lunar Challenge to challenge staff and students to virtually travel to the moon using the free Strava app and collectively reach 238,855 miles.
We want as many staff and students to get involved as possible to encourage physical activity and maintain a positive relationship to physical and mental health during the lockdown. The Challenge will start on Monday 11 January and will end on Sunday 28 February.
There will be a national leaderboard for cycling/running (or walking) and a cumulative activity mileage total, so colleges can compete against each other and be in the running for prizes. All activity contributes to the college and national total, so whether this is a walk around the park, 5k run or 15-mile cycle, everything has a positive contribution to the total, so get out and get moving!
How to Get Involved
All you need to do are click the below link, set up an account and fill out all the account details. It will then take you to the club, then just click join. There are 2 different clubs to join; running or cycling. After doing this, you then need to download the Strava app onto your phone and log into the account you have just set up.

How to use Strava;
- Every run, cycle or walk you do you need to track it by clicking record which is at the bottom of the app.
- Once clicking record it will ask you what activity you are doing. Please note: if you are walking you must list this activity as ‘run’ for your miles to be included in the challenge.
- Click the start button and it will record your activity.
- When you have finished your activity click the pause button, then finish.
- You will then be able to fill details out about your activity such as ‘Lunch Time Walk’ and add a little description if you wanted to.
- Click Save Activity. This activity will then automatically post into the Clubs that you are joined to.
Prizes
There will be multiples opportunities to win prizes and keep staff and students engaged. For those who are competitive, there will be three prizes for the colleges who contribute the most miles towards the national total. This will be total miles including both cycling and running/walking. There will also be a random prize draw for all participating colleges that reach 300 activities during the Challenge.
The leaderboard will be finalised and winners will be announced by Tuesday 2 March.
