Long Road Lions vs. Moulton College: 65-56 WIN

Posted on

Long Road Lions got their fourth win of the season coming out 65 – 56 winners against bottom of the table Moulton college

The game started with both teams looking a little nervy as the importance of this result was evident to both sets of players. The lions has a 7-0 run to push out an early advantage in the middle of the 1st quarter and pushed out to an early 17-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Second quarter again started very even with both teams exchanging baskets, however a run sparked by the sharp shooting of Josh Batcheler who had 13pts of his game high 29pts in the 2nd quarter pushed the lead out to 11pts 34 – 23. A late surge from Moulton brought it back to 6pts going into the half time break, the lions up 35 – 29

At the start of the third quarter the lions increased their energy on defence and Moulton found it difficult to score. This provided a number of transition opportunities for the lions Guards as they went on a 15 – 3 run to push the lead out to 54 – 35 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was a scrappy affair with lots of stops in play which seemed to break the rhythm of Long Road and allowed Moulton to go ona 9-2 run which gave them hope of a remarkable 4th quarter comeback as the Lions players became increasingly nervy on offence. However Micah Gillings score two basket late on of his 14pts to steady the ship and see the lions home for the 65 – 56 win.

“This was a good win for us” Said Coach Pete Charlwood after the game. “The boys deserve a lot of credit for keeping the composure in what was a chippy game that clearly meant a lot to both sides.”

“Credit to Moulton for their effort today and resilience to stay in the game, but from our point of view I’m a little disappointed with our 4th quarter which nearly gave Moulton the opportunity to make life very uncomfortable.  We still have a lot to learn and we need to be more ruthless and efficient on offence, however I was pleased with our defence today.

Josh Batcheler had a season high 29pts for Long Road with Micah Gillings adding 14pts. Moulton were led by Z. Frost with 23 pts and Z. Dixon with 15pts.

Long Road await the visit of Loughborough college for their final league game of the season on the 6th March.
