Long Road College welcomed County Upper on Monday evening for there 2nd home game of the season. This game was postponed from earlier on in the season. The game was played with ferocious intensity from both sides with defence dominating the game in a very low scoring affair, which could have gone either way, however, County upper broke the Long Road crowds hearts handing the Cambridge Academy side their third 2pt loss of the season
The game started with a frantic pace and both teams committing to aggressive defence but also possibly lacking control on offence as both teams struggled to score early on and throughout the first quarter, the game tied 10-10 at the end of the first.
The second quarter was equally tight however both teams started to find some gaps on the offensive end and in transition to up the scoring rate. E. Kriunas dropping 9 points of his team high 23pts in the quarter for County Upper, while D. Batcheler matched him with 10pts of his game-high 28pts. The game looked like it was going into the break tied, however a 3pt shot on the buzzer from Kriunas meant the Wolves had a 3pt lead at the half way point.
The second half continued in the same vain with defence dominating the tie. Long Road mixed up their defences and caused County upper to become unsettled in their offence only scoring 7pts in the quarter. Whilst Lon Road continued to put the county upper defence under pressure forcing them to foul a lot which meant a number of opportunities at the line. Lon Road took a 2pt lead into the 4th Quarter up 46 – 44.
The final quarter was tight all the way with 8 lead changes and the game remaining within 2pts the whole way through. It was clear this one was going right to the wire. Long Road were up 1 with just over a minute and had some good looks but couldn’t knock them down. County Upper had a timely 5-0 run with a big 3 and then a runner in translation to go up by 4pts with 30secs left that ultimately sealed the win. Long Road called a time out to advance the ball. They executed a good play and he hit the runner to bring them within 2pts but in the end just fell short once again going down 59-61.
Dan Batcheler led all scorers with 28pts for Long Road while K. Holmes had another impressive performance with 9pts and 16 rebounds and 5 Blocks. T. Revell and E. Kriunas led the Wolves with 21pts and 23pts respectively.
Coach Charlwood said, “I couldn’t be more proud of how the boys played tonight, they gave me everything they had. Our intent and commitment to defence was excellent for the most part and we had another game where we had a chance to win the game. It has obviously been hard for the boys to have to deal with another loss by 2pts but there was so many positives to take from todays game and a massive step in the right direction of how we want to play this year.”
Long Road now have to travel to Colchester on Weds to take on Essex Rebels Academy before hosting Leighton next Weds at home.
