Eighteen Long Road Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award students set off from Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre on their practice canoeing expedition – their goal being to paddle the thirty-five or so miles along the River Soar to Nottingham.
Sam Grace, Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator and Sport teacher says: “The weather was mostly sunny but with a constant biting wind. It took the students 2 ½ days to complete, and they had to portage around quite a few locks and weirs on Day 1: hard going when the canoes are packed with all their kit and equipment. Our students did very well and kept up a good pace, so I am confident that the final expedition will be a success.”
The final expedition starts on the 4th July and is from Brecon to Monmouth along the River Wye.
