“I’m studying Microbiology at Aberystwyth,” he explains. “I have to do work experience as part of my course, so what could be better than coming back to Long Road to help new Biology students find their feet?”
Alex, who studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths (Statistics) and AS Classical Civilisation at Long Road, started off his summer helping the Estates department at the college. “There’s a lot of lugging around!” he says. “It’s amazing how much repair and rebuilding work goes on when students aren’t here.”
Once the new students arrived, Alex got to work assisting Biology teachers Chris Graham (Biology Course Team Leader) and Paul Andrew (also an Assistant Head of Studies). “I’m working 1:1 with students helping them find their feet, answering their questions about the course and talking about my experience of university. I’ve even been helping them to count daisies as part of a sampling activity! I’ve also been given a pink t-shirt to wear as an honorary Peer Mentor and a yellow one as an Equality Champion.
“I really enjoyed my time at Long Road. I came to a Taster Day and really liked the atmosphere in the college. I knew it was a place where I could apply myself. Aberystwyth University was the right choice for me, not least because it has the same kind of atmosphere as Long Road. I’m considering becoming a teacher or working in a hospital laboratory, so I’m really grateful to Long Road for letting me work before my university term starts.”
