Recent high profile incidents in professional football involving racism have led to lots of reaction and discussion and highlight the importance of equality and diversity education both in football and wider society. Long Road students invited “Kick it Out “ to come and do a workshop with LR footballers and sports students.
So this week Osei Sankofa, a former Premier League player, visited LR and engaged students in a thought provoking and challenging discussion around discrimination looking particularly at the use of language and “banter”. Osei also drew on his own experience in challenging racism and sexism and students made some excellent contributions in a highly informative discussion.
At the end students also asked questions about Osei football career, with student Harry Harding asking him who was the most difficult player he ever had to mark in the Premier League and Osei was in no doubt that Manchester United’s “Welsh Wizard” Ryan Giggs was almost impossible to defend against!
