French A level student Evelyn Morrison had a dream French work experience placement this Easter – in the famous chocolatier in Lille, Au Chat Bleu (At the Blue Cat). The first chocolate shop was opened in 1912 in the town of Le Touquet by two chocolate- and cat-loving sisters. The sisters owned Persian Blue cats, hence the name. The business was so successful that there are now franchises in Paris, Deauville, Quimper and Lille.
The shop sells a wide range of hand-made chocolates, including ‘chat bleu’ chocolates with little blue cat emblems on top.
So, what did Evelyn’s job involve?
“My task was to make the chocolate boxes and then to fill them with all the delicious chocolates on sale – I particularly liked the pralines and tuiles. I mainly worked in the cellar or the administrative office on the first floor, talking to the staff.
“By the end of the week, I felt much more confident with my language skills, and I would recommend work experience to anyone who is keen to improve their French.”
