28.06.12 – Cricket Team through to Solway Cup Final
Another close T20 match with local rivals Hills Road played out on the Luard Road pitch yesterday. A difficult season, with weather affected fixtures, meant both sides entered the Solway Cup semi-final with less practice than would be considered ideal. However, it was clear from the start that this match would be hard fought, characterised by a clear competitive edge throughout.
We took to the field, opening the bowling with attacking spells from Tyler Phillips (2-18) and Ollie Sellers (0-21). With 4 overs max per bowler, captain Adam Wright rotated our 3 other bowlers considerately – Nick Griggs took most wickets(3-23), ably supported by Alex Flynn (2-31) and Josh Arksey bowled a careful and really effective line (0-20). Excellent team work in the field, with a solid performance behind the stumps by Lauran Andrews, saw Hills Road close on 118-7.
Using the previously productive openers of Phillips,T. and Flynn, we took the score to 59 -0 at the halfway stage. Flynn batted sensibly, reaching 18 before being bowled. Phillips,T. batted throughout the innings (63no), paired with Griggs (18), Phillips,C. (0) and Wright (10no). Lots of the team chipped in, but Tyler Phillip’s batting was too belligerent for Hills Road to contain.
Long Road won in the 17th over, scoring 119-3.
Coach, Nigel Ballard, commented “A really fantastic team effort, with a superb winning attitude demonstrated throughout. Lots of individual contributions, but our cohesion in the field, coupled with sensible bowling and aggressive batting won through in the end. We now wait to hear who we will met in the final, between Kings Ely and Wisbech.”
Team: Adam Wright (Capt.), Nick Griggs (Vice Capt.), Lauren Andrews (WK), Ollie Sellers, Josh Arksey. Tyler Phillips, Alex Flynn, Casey Phillips, David Attmore, George Udall, Harry Yardy.
