On the evening of 29th November 2018, students and parents from Years 1 and 2 of the Applied Science Extended Diploma joined teachers, employers and staff from Career Ready, at local industry leader ARM. This Celebratory Event marked the end of the Year 2’s involvement in an innovative and highly successful programme of activities, bringing our students together with STEM organisations and providing them with insights into a range of job roles, processes and application of science in the world of work.
Students helped to deliver an interesting evening with a panel reflecting on lessons learned, and tips for current Year 1 students. Parents were given the opportunity to ask important questions about how the scheme runs, whilst students also had networked with employers present.
“This has been a great partnership,” commented Huw Williams (teacher and Course Team Leader.) “It has helped students engage with employers and develop their understanding of the world of work far better than we can explain in a classroom”.
Students also spoke favourably about how the skills they had learned via Masterclasses had helped them to develop their employability skills, and to complete application forms for the next stage of their careers.
Perhaps the evening was best summed up by Simon Humphrey, ARM host and Chair of the Local Area Board for organisations involved in local Career Ready delivery when he said, “My experience has taught me that it is great to seize opportunities when you can, and make the most of them. A bit like I am seeing this evening; students who have worked hard and who are using the networking and communication skills we have helped them to develop.”
