Not only did Cambridge win the Oxford and Cambridge Boat race this year: Long Road students also had a chance to show off their amazing form at the college indoor rowing championships on 1 April. Twenty-four male students and 8 female were put through their paces in the Sports Hall lobby as they raced the 1500 metre distance in pairs. No-one beat the five-minute pain barrier, but Ben Jackson won the male competition with 5 minutes 11 seconds with Matt McCarthy second on 5 minutes 17 seconds and Charlie Price third on 5 minutes 19 seconds.
The girls put up a good fight with Beth Purser’s winning time of 6 minutes 14 seconds, Daisy Glover second on 6 minutes 24 seconds and Sophie Lanham third with 6 minutes 36 seconds.
The British Indoor Rowing Championships (over a distance of 2,000 metres) are in November: could a Cambridge college rower be in the running?
