To mark this month’s national Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham, a group of superfit Long Road students battled it out on the college rowing machines to score the fastest 1500 metre dash. Top of the scoreboard for the male competition was Ben Jackson, who reached the ‘finish line’ in 5 minutes 6 seconds. In hot pursuit was Gareth Baxter on 5m 9s. Third place was taken by Sachin Booysin on 5m 15s, while fourth place went to Ryan Lockwood on 5m 28s.

The Long Road female competition was equally hard fought, with Holly Archer hurtling to the ‘finish line’ in 6m 38s. In second place was Gemma O’Connor on 6m 53s, and just behind her shoulder was Ellen Bridges on 7m 3s.

“This is a fun event which shows just how fit and keen our students are, ” comments Rob Day, Sports Development Manager. “Every time we stage this, more and more students take part. The last few metres are agony, but all the students who finished felt a real buzz!”
