Careers in Photography – industry professionals share their secrets

Posted on

Photography is everywhere. In today’s media-driven culture we are surrounded by photographs. From the sophisticated imagery used by advertising photographers in magazines, to the candid photography found on Instagram, the camera’s ability to record the world around us creates an infinite number of opportunities for the aspiring photographer.

The key message our students’ are receiving from professionals in the creative industries is that having good skills in film photography will make you stand out from the crowd. As a part of progression week we invited two leading professionals in the creative industries to talk to our A Level Photography students, to offer them guidance as they consider their future careers.

The portrait Photographer, Chris Frazer Smith, who has worked with the biggest names in advertising, gave an inspiring talk to the students offering insights into his career as an international photographer. He encouraged students to show their work to a wider audience through exhibitions and competitions. He told them to keep using film to extend their portfolios.

Our second speaker, Bev Carruthers, who is head of the Photography degree at London College of Communication, talked about studying photography at degree level. She agreed that knowing how to use film gave students a big advantage when they were competing for work in the industry. She gave the students useful advice for their Personal Statement; emphasising how important it was for them to write about what excites them about the subject, giving plenty of evidence.
