Rachel MacLean, researcher in Social Policy from Anglia Ruskin University, recently spent the day working with AS Sociology students. The aim was for students to find out more about an on-going Europe-wide, research project, The Street Life Safety for Young People
Over 5000 young people, aged 11 – 16 , have completed a questionnaire on both their experiences and perceptions of risks to safety during the journey to school. The research aims to identify new methods and make policy recommendations to help young people feel and stay safe during the time before and after school.
The AS Sociology students worked with Rachel to discuss the research topic, and to comment on some of the research methodology used : questionnaires and focus groups. This gave our students insights into the process of engaging in research, how to evaluate existing research and the complexities of research design.
Rachel recorded ‘field notes’ during the research design evaluation groups, and will use them to develop the design of focus groups of 11 – 16 year olds, taking place from April 2011.
