Level 3 Applied Science Diploma students visited the independent associated companies Napp Pharmaceuticals and Mundipharma International Ltd on the Cambridge Science Park. Teacher Zoe Thorn explains:
First we saw the production facility where analgesic tablets were being made, coated and put into packaging. We then visited the analysis laboratory where they test the tablets to make sure they release the strong painkilling ingredients at the correct rate.
Our students learned a lot about careers in the pharmaceutical industry, and the differences between college laboratories and industrial ones.
We were shown around by a former Long Road student, Will Young, who left Long Road in 2011 after taking A levels in Electronics, Maths and Chemistry. He studied Chemistry at the University of Reading with a gap year at Napp Pharmaceuticals. He then joined the company full time in September 2015.
Our visit was part of the companies’ Science Ambassador Scheme whereby students can visit to find out more about careers in science. The aim is to increase the number of people working in STEMM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) and to raise awareness of these often complex subjects.
I would like to thank Napp and Mundipharma for offering these exciting and thought-provoking opportunities to our students.
