At the start of the month our year 1 Applied Science students were lucky enough to visit Amazon at their Cambridge development centre giving them the chance to take part in a skillathon event. The students spent the day taking on STEM challenges, focusing on coding and designing new Alexa skills.
All our students took these difficult challenges in their stride and had a great time learning new skills and experiences from the Amazon staff and volunteers. Our students said…
“I personally, really enjoyed the Amazon Trip. I love coding and I really enjoyed being able to work together with people and demonstrate such skills.”
“Overall I had a great time, I learnt valuable skills in coding, leadership and group work. Amazon had great members of staff that helped us when we needed it and made sure help was never too far away, it was fascinating seeing all the ways I could code for the Alexa test it out and even code for what the Alexa would say back. The trip was also very informative about what the requirements are to get a job at amazon and some of the roles amazon has to offer. The power points and presentations were well put together and gave us valuable information about what goes into the making and coding of Alexa. I would recommend anyone else to go on this trip and I would go again myself.”
“I personally enjoyed how nice and helpful the people were when we had to do the coding and instructions for Alexa. Even though we had almost no experience in coding and didn’t understand much of it, they were very patient and walked us through it very well. This is shown by how everyone’s demonstration worked perfectly when we demonstrated it and there were no mistakes in any of the coding.”
The trip was organised by Career Ready; a national charity who brings together colleges and companies to prepare students for their future careers in STEM. Head of Careers and Progression, Andy Goodwin, said “It’s not often that we get to take part in events like this with such innovative companies and I’d like to thank Amazon and Career Ready for inspiring our students with this brilliant event.”
