Ex-students spend the day as Teachers!

Posted on

Last month we welcomed back Long Road Alumni Hannah and Jonny who spent the day back in our PE and Sports department, shadowing our Level 2 Diploma, Level 3 Diploma and A Level teachers!

Hannah studied at Long Road from 2015 to 2017, achieving excellent results in A-Level PE, English Literature & Language and Geography. She told us “Since leaving Long Road, I went straight to University in September 2017 to the University of Brighton to study BA (Hons) Secondary Physical Education with QTS – which is basically training to be a PE teacher. Long Road was extremely helpful to me on applying and going through the UCAS process so it was made as smooth as possible.”

Jonny spent 3 years studying with us at Long Road, joining us as a Level 2 student to gain his GCSE Englis grade C. Thinking back to his time at Long Road, Jonny told us “The support I received from the staff was incredibly positive, always helping when I need the support. Not only the teachers but the support staff who helped with my writing to become a better quality. Alongside English I was completing a vocational course of CTEC Sport level 2 which I excelled in as I had experience of this environment, the tasks were not complicated and found time in the year to work on other parts of my life for example Cadets and DofE.

Then I progressed on to the level 3 version of the course which was more of a challenge but was able to gain distinctions overall – very proud of myself! The sports staff have been with me throughout helping me get ideas on what to do in the future; I want to become a teacher or a career in sport and outdoor activities. My plan is to complete a QTS or a PGCE once I get experience and hopefully further my career in teaching.”

How did they feel about coming back to visit us for the day?

Jonny felt that he gained “a range of experiences in the teaching of sport and PE understanding the different strategies” while Hannah said spending the day observing PE and Sports lessons “gave me a true insight into the varying teaching styles and approaches that both the teachers use and therefore what is most effective for the students. This provides more experience for me that I can transfer onto my degree and hopefully use in the future when applying for jobs.”

We wish Jonny and Hannah the best of luck with their future careers and hope that they come back to visit us again soon – perhaps next time we’ll be welcoming them back as new teachers!
