On Friday 8th March our Duke of Edinburgh Gold students left Long Road and headed to Leicester Outdoors Centre to take part in Canoe skills training.
Year 1 students are required to complete two intensive canoe skills training days to progress onto the Practice Expedition. They’re learning how to confidently control a tandem canoe by working on paddling technique, steering and communication. Rivers can be unpredictable, so part of the training is on river safety and how to manage emergency situations.
The part they all dread is the capsizing drills, learning the practical skills to rescue each other if this occurs. Throughout the training, teams improved decision making and teamwork as such skills will help them become self-sufficient during the expeditions.
The Practice Expedition (April 26th -28th) is fast approaching and the teams are now beginning to plan the route and organise kit/equipment.
