Sport Level 3 Diploma

Level 3 Applied Courses

Spend your time in our brand new fitness suite, sport science lab, purpose built sport centre, dedicate sports classrooms or outside on our extensive playing fields and state of the art All Weather Pitch.

On our Level 3 Sport Diploma you will study a broad range of units, increasing your knowledge, understanding and skills in several sports-related fields such as nutrition, coaching, anatomy and physiology, sports psychology and performance analysis. Taught by a highly successful team of extremely experienced specialist teaching staff you will develop skills required by sports based employers.

You will play an active role in your learning, developing a range of vocational and sports based skills valued by employers and universities. Whether you are looking to follow a higher education pathway taking a sports related degree at university, or straight into employment, whether as a fitness professional, coach, teacher or manager, we have a fantastic track record in helping you to achieve your career goals.


You can choose to study this course as…

  • an Extended Certificate (60 credits) the equivalent to one A Level
  • a Diploma (120 credits) the equivalent to two A Levels
  • an Extended Diploma (180 credits) the equivalent to three A Levels

 

Course Content

The Level 3 Diploma in Sport at Long Road is a highly successful course
delivered by an extremely experienced team of qualified, specialist teaching staff.

The course has an excellent record of helping students to achieve their sports related progression aims via sports-related apprenticeships, employment and university courses.

As this is a vocational course, the emphasis is on the application of theory to practice. In each of the units you will either produce a portfolio of evidence that shows you have met the assessment objectives including a small number of exams in areas such as Anatomy & Physiology.

You will gain specialist knowledge, understanding and skills through a wide variety of activities including practical performance, coaching and analysis.

This course offers you a broad range of units which will increase your knowledge, understanding and skills in several sports-related fields such as coaching, anatomy and physiology, sports psychology and performance analysis.


Assessment

Extended Certificate:

  • Exam = 40%
  • Coursework = 60%
  • Exam Board: OCR

Diploma:

  • Exam = 30%
  • Coursework = 70%
  • Exam Board: OCR

Extended Diploma:

  • Exam = 25%
  • Coursework = 75%
  • Exam Board: OCR

Special Features

Students will get the opportunity to take additional courses & trips while on this programme including Dodgeball Level 2, Sports First Aid qualification, Level 2 Gym Instructors and course related residential trips & visits.

We have strong links with the ARU Sport & Exercise Science Department who provide annual university insight day’s exclusively to our students.

We are also very proud of our annual ‘Sport Alumni Event’ which attracts 20-25 of our ex-students back into college to discuss their career pathways and sports related experiences with Year 1 students.

We also have strong links with Cambridge United Football Club who frequently visit to deliver sports career insight sessions and offer WEX placements and paid coaching opportunities.

Entry Requirements

  • At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 including GCSE English.
  • Grade 4 in GCSE PE or Merit in Sport Level 2 Diploma if taken.

After Long Road

Some of the degrees being taken by Long Road students who recently completed their studies include Physiotherapy at Leeds Beckett, Hertfordshire & Hull University, Sports Therapy & Sports Coaching at ARU, Secondary Physical Education & QTS (Teaching Degrees) at Bedford & Brighton University, Sports Development & Sports Business Management & UEA, Sport & Exercise Science at Nottingham Trent, Durham & Leeds Beckett & Sports Journalism at Birmingham University.

We also currently have two ex-students on football & basketball scholarships in the US.
Students currently employed in the sports sector are working in a wide range of areas, examples include a number of Primary & Secondary PE teachers, sports coaches at Cambridge United, Norwich City Community Trusts & Premier Sport, Personal Trainers at David Lloyd, Pure Gym & Parkside Health & Leisure, Sports Therapy business owners & pitch side sports therapy at Cambridge Rugby Club.
