The Level 3 Diploma in Sport at Long Road is not just about being able to play sport; it will provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress onto University level sport-related programmes such as Sport and Physical Education, Sport Science, Sports Coaching and Development or Sport and Leisure Management.
You can choose to study this course as…
- an Extended Certificate (60 credits) the equivalent to one A Level
- a Diploma (120 credits) the equivalent to two A Levels
- an Extended Diploma (180 credits) the equivalent to three A Levels

Course Content
As this is a vocational course, the emphasis is on the application of theory to practice. In each of the units, you will produce a portfolio of evidence that shows you have met the assessment objectives. You will gain specialist knowledge, understanding and skills through a wide variety of activities including practical performance, coaching and analysis.
This course offers you a broad range of units which will increase your knowledge, understanding and skills in several sports-related fields such as coaching, anatomy and physiology, sports psychology and performance analysis. All students will complete a work placement of their choice in the sports industry in the second year.

- 70% coursework
- 30% exam
Special Features
You will get the opportunity to take a number of additional courses while on this programme including Dodgeball Level 2, First Aid at Work, Level 2 Gym Instructors, and National Pool Lifeguarding (NPLQ).
There are visits to universities to find out more about sport-related degrees as well as visits from industry experts to provide specialist insight specific to unit delivery, and progression routes after Long Road.
Entry Requirements
- At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 including GCSE English.
- Grade 4 in GCSE PE or a Merit Level 2 Applied Sport if taken.
- Students with a Distinction grade in Level 2 Applied Sport may be considered with a Grade 3 in GCSE
