Progress Coaches

We know that moving from school to college is a big change: a new campus, new faces and a new level of independence. To make sure you feel at home you will be assigned a Progress Coach, a dedicated member of staff ready to support you as you settle into Long Road life. Working together with you and your family from the moment you join our community, they will ensure a smooth transition and be on hand to guide you throughout your time with us.

As you begin to find your feet, your Progress Coach will always be there to keep a close eye on how you’re getting on; they will help you stay on track and give you the support you need, when you need it. Whilst continually overseeing your academic progress, they will update you and your family on your achievements and celebrate your successes. The team works closely with teachers, Academic Support and Student Wellbeing staff to make sure that everyone gets the care they need. Our collaborative approach means that all of our students get the most out of their study programme, and our Progress Coaches are always there to reach out with a helping hand.

You’ll receive:

  • Regular one-to-one Progress Reviews to monitor your academic progress and support your wellbeing.
  • Advice and tips to help you achieve at college and get the most out of your time with us.
  • Guidance on building your own learning plan, so you can see what you need to achieve and develop an independent approach to monitoring your own progress and performance.
  • Practical tools to build effective study skills including time management, organisation and study and revision techniques that work.
  • Help to create your own personal progression plan, with advice on careers, good-quality apprenticeships and university pathways.

Tutorials

It’s never too soon to start thinking about your next steps, and when you need to make decisions about your future, you will be supported every step of the way.

Regular group tutorials and workshops will help you explore your options so that you can make an informed choice. Trained to provide up-to-date information and impartial advice about careers, your Progress Coach will work with you individually to identify your career goals, explore the different ways you can get there, and find the pathway that best suits you and your ambitions - whether that be on to further or higher education, an apprenticeship or directly into employment.

By supporting you to find the enrichment or extracurricular activities that build a great personal statement or a stand-out CV - or just fill you with joy - your Progress Coach will motivate you to take action and put in place everything you need to step forward into a happy and fulfilling future.

VESPA

Inspiring you to find your vision is key to the Progress Coach role. At the start of your course they will introduce you to the VESPA framework, helping you make use of effective tools that enable you to dream big and aim high, reflect on what you’re good at, and develop the new skills, systems and attitudes necessary for successful sixth form study. We know it feels like a big step - but your Progress Coach will help you build your confidence.  You got this!

  • Vision: having a clear goal, making the connection between the work you are doing and the reason you're doing it.
  • Effort: working hard during lessons and being proactive in your independent study time.
  • Systems: organising your learning and your time.
  • Practice: practising and developing your skills.
  • Attitudes: constructively responding to setbacks and believing you can improve.
