Course Overview

Our Business Extended Certificate course is designed to meet the changing needs of the business sector and to prepare you for the challenges you’ll face in Higher Education or employment.

This course is available to study as an Extended Certificate (60-credit course, equivalent to 1 A Level) 


Through deepening your analysis and research skills, you will explore ways in which businesses respond to changes in their economic, social and technological environment; and gain an appreciation of the influence different stakeholders can have upon a business.

You will create portfolios of work, which will include presentations, role plays and formal reports, to develop and assess your communication skills. You will also develop skills in other widely used business software tools such as excel to create Gantt Charts in order to undertake Critical Path Analysis. You will gain key business skills, such as how to analyse financial data from balance sheets and income statements, and write a variety of communications in a professional manner.

The course is broad in its content and will give you the opportunity to study a wide variety of topics, giving you an insight into future pathways. The course will provide you with a number of soft skills required by employers as you will have been exposed to a workload that will require them to manage deadlines, prioritise tasks and delegate work within teams.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs at Grade 4 including:
    • Grade 4 in GCSE English Language
    • Grade 4 in GCSE Maths
    • Grade 4 in GCSE Business, or a Merit in Level 2 Business, if taken

Why choose this course? 

Students that enjoy this course have a desire to learn more about the businesses that influence our daily behaviour. If you have every wondered why a business has changed something about a product or service that you like; you’ll find out the reason by studying Applied Level 3 Business Studies. You will also enjoy this subject if variety in the classroom is important to you, as all the pieces of coursework will be vastly different from one another that will develop you into a well-rounded learner.

Trips to include a summer visit to Thorpe Park where you will undertake a workshop focussing on the marketing mix at Thorpe Park.  We will organise a range of speakers from prestigious local businesses such as Price Waterhouse Cooper, Price Bailey and Deloitte.  These are sessions are activity based and delivered by their younger members of staff who will explain the different routes to gain employment and what their typical day involves.

Skills you'll gain

Skills developed over the first year include verbal and written communication skills through delivering presentations and undertaking an assessed role play. You will develop your research skills and learn how to reference your work.You will learn how to structure exam questions, how to interpret case studies and analyse key financial data.

In the second year you will learn how to structure and write a variety of communications, including letters and emails. 

After Long Road

The proportion of students that progress from Level 3 Applied Business Studies to university is in line with the proportion of A Level students studying the equivalent qualification. Recent examples of destinations include: Anglia Ruskin, Bath Spa, Nottingham Trent, Leeds and Loughborough.

Apprenticeships are also very popular with students on this course with many using the soft skills learnt on the course to be very successful in application interviews.

I chose to study Applied Level 3 Business as I am interested in learning how businesses react to competition and how new products are developed. I think I have learned many skills that will make me a great employee and entrepreneur one day.
